Association of Air Force Missileers "Victors in the Cold War" 2010 National Meeting at Tucson - Our Ninth National Meeting was a great success, with more than 300 people attending. We had a superb tour day that combined a visit to the Titan Missile Museum with a tour of Davis Monthan AFB. The guides at Titan were superior - a great way to visit the Titan II site. The 12th AF Commander, Lt Gen Glenn Spears, hosted us for a great visit to the base, which included 12th AF and wing mission briefs, a visit to the flight line to see the assigned aircraft and a tour of the CAOC, the operations center that 12th AF runs to monitor events in the western hemisphere. We had lunch at the club on base during the tours. Friday, golfers teed it up in Tubac while many others toured the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum and San Xavier Mission. Over 220 of us then toured the AMARG, the aircraft storage area some call the boneyard, and then had a tour and dinner at the Pima Air and Space Museum, hosted by their great volunteer guides. AAFM member Bruce Stone, a caterer in Tucson, provided a great dinner for us at the museum. Saturday morning at the general membership meeting, we had reports from the National Minuteman Missile Historic Site, Cooperstown's Oscar-Zero and the Walker museum, followed by an exceptional presentation by Brig Gen Ev Thomas, commander of the AF Nuclear Weapons Center, updating us on the status of Air Force nuclear programs. That afternoon, many folks toured either Tubac or Old Tucson Studios, and we concluded with our AAFM Banquet, featuring our speaker, Lt General Frank Klotz, the commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. We had 27 young officers, enlisted members and spouses as our guests for dinner, including the DM color guard and one of our project officers. AAFM member Phil Middleton honored us by singing the National Anthem at the start of the banquet. We were glad to have folks from the 556 SMS, 579 SMS, ALCS and GLCM at Comiso be part of our meeting. The group photos taken during the base tour are available from AAFM. GREAT FALLS IN OCTOBER 2012 - Our Tenth National Meeting will be a very special event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the first Minuteman on alert, b0th events of October 1962. The meeting will convene on 10 October and will include events listed below. We are working with the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce, the 341st Missile wing, 20th AF and AF Global Strike Command to make this our biggest meeting ever. We are asking any of you - members, spouses, children, friends, to provide your recollections of events during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the efforts to get A flight on alert at Malmstrom. We would like your story on a single page document (with or without photos) for a special commemorative book. We would also like you to take part in our program at the banquet, which will consist of short reminisces of those two closely tied together events. We will have hotel and registration information in early spring 2011 - plan now to join us in Montana - and make it an extended stay by coming early or staying late. Our planned events at Malmstrom:
REGISTRATION FOR GREAT FALLS EITHER ON LINE OR BY DOWNLOADING A FORM AND MAILING A CHECK Local Area Meetings - Local area meetings are held periodically at locations around the country - if you are interested in helping host one of these AAFM gatherings in your area, let us know. Unit Reunions - The number of missile units that are conducting reunions is growing. We encourage these meetings, publicize the dates in our newsletter and in this home page and provide lists of members who have served in the organizations that conduct them. We also encourage involvement with the World War II units that were the forerunners of our missile units. Several missile unit reunions have been held in conjunction with the AAFM National Meetings. If your unit wants to host a reunion combined with our next meeting, let AAFM know - we arrange all the events, rooms and facilities and you get together with missileers from all backgrounds. A listing of all upcoming reunions and meetings is on the Warble Tone - click on the Warble Tone entry at the top left of this page. |
